Brush to Stage: Shen Yun Dancers’ Grace, Spirit & Precision.(1)

I’ve watched Shen Yun three times over different years, and this time, standing with Shen Yun’s events, I created illustrations inspired by their dances. As I drew, I realized these pictures held far more stories and subtleties than initially met the eye.

Here’s one of the illustrations I created for the #StandWithShenYun event:

This reference comes from Shen Yun’s 2017 performance, the Han Dynasty Sleeves program—a source of inspiration that left a deep impression on me. It not only showcased the beauty of the dance, but also let me feel the passion and perseverance behind the performance.

During the process of creating the illustrations, I felt as if I could sense every inch of the dancer’s muscles stretching and relaxing. That sense of composure and lightness can’t be captured through casual drawing. The flow of the lines, the tension in the movement—even that unique spirit—was far more complex than I’d imagined.

With recent news about Shen Yun, I’ve come to better understand the sacrifices these dancers make. Whether in painting, music, dance, or any other art form or profession, continual self-challenge and growth are essential. Reading about their stories, I deeply resonate.

Every day, basic training forms their mandatory coursework, all to maintain the high standard of each performance. The artists’ strict self-discipline resembles a spiritual practice, which I regard with great admiration.

As for me—having worked for five straight days—my energy levels fluctuate wildly, and it’s difficult to stay at peak performance. That contrast deepens my curiosity: how exactly do they do it?
